7 Reasons Why YOU Should Learn Photography in Nigeria | Tonydoo Visuals Photography Academy

Here are my 7 top reasons why YOU should learn photography. So if you’re already learning, this will give you motivation to improve, and if ‘learn photography’ has been on your to-do list for some time, hopefully this article will give you the motivation to do something about it! So here are my 7 reasons why I believe that everyone should learn how to take great photos…..

1. To capture a moment in time
Once you have snapped that moment it is captured forever. These days we take photos for granted, but just think about that for a minute. How amazing is it that you can capture your children doing something wonderful together, and that moment will be seen and enjoyed by your grandchildren and your great-grandchildren. This is one of the main reasons I love photography. Capturing memories to hold on to forever. And sorry to say it, but if you are using a point-and-shoot camera on the automatic setting, you’ve probably realised by now that you’re missing too many of these fantastic moments.

2. To remember what people looked like at a certain time
If we want to remember what our children looked like when they were babies, the first thing we do is pull out the photo album. And if we’re thinking about someone who has passed away, we look through photos of them. Photographs are the only way we can preserve how people looked at certain times of their lives. But it’s very important that we do print the photos, not just leave them on a hard drive which could fail (but that’s a whole different blog post!)

3. To be creative
So many people who come to my workshops say that they’re not creative people. But once you know how to use your camera and find the right light, you will be amazed at the creative photos you are taking. Yes, some people have more of an eye for photography than others; some things just can’t be taught. But I do believe that ANYONE can learn how to take great photos. And some people who do consider themselves to be creative, lose that side of themselves once they become parents, and learning photography can be a fantastic way to ignite that creative spark again.

4. It will make you appreciate the world around you
I believe that learning photography will make you enjoy life more. I know that sounds cheesy but it’s true! Suddenly you’ll notice the beautiful sunbeams coming through the trees, the wonderful catchlights in your son’s eyes, the way the bluebells bring out the colour of your daughter’s eyes. All of this stuff may have passed you by before, but once you learn how to take great photos, you’ll see beauty everywhere.

5. To capture the world the way you see it
There is nothing more frustrating when you want to take a photo of that beautiful lavender field, but you take it and it just looks washed out and rubbish. Or you want to show the world how beautiful your baby is but you just can’t take a decent photo of him. It’s an amazing feeling when you can take photos and they actually show what you see (and often even make it look even better!) And there is nothing more satisfying than when someone says they hate all photos of themselves, but you take one of them and they love it!

6. Photography fits in with your life
It’s very easy to get on with your life and never really take any time out for yourself….to learn new things and be creative. This is especially the case when you have children, it’s tricky to find the time to exercise and see your friends let alone learn a new skill! But photography is a wonderful thing to learn as you can do all of the practising when you are with your friends and family. You can take photos anytime, anywhere and you don’t even need to have your camera on you, iPhones take fantastic photos! These photos below were taken on my iPhone on our camping trip to Featherdown Farms in Devon.
featherdown-farm

7. And lastly, it’s a skill you can show off easily!
There isn’t much point having an amazing skill if you can’t show people! It today’s digital world, showing our photos has become an everyday thing. Remember those days when you would just show your parents and your best friends your holiday pics? Well now we’re sharing them with hundreds of people on Facebook! So you want to make sure your photos look as good as possible. And you’re just not going to get great results if your just snapping away with a compact camera on auto without knowing anything about light or composition. I’ve never advertised my photography workshops, all of my bookings come through word of mouth and that’s normally due to previous students showing off their new photography skills on Facebook!

If you already have an interest in photography, I hope this blog post has motivated you to pick up your camera and start shooting more, and if you haven’t thought about learning photography before, I hope you now feel inspired to do so!

You Will Laugh upon Seeing this Nestle Milo Ad for Nestle Nigeria [PHOTOS] by Tonydoo Visuals

"Excellence is an art won by training and habituation.  We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit."

Hilarious! Nairalander Creates Hilarious Disruptive Ad for Nestle Milo Nigeria. This will leave you speechless!

Remember the old age tagline used by Nestle Milo after its advertisement "Nestle Milo...The Food Drink of Future Champions"

Have you ever pondered about what the future champion would have grown into by now after about almost thirty-something years?

This was the rationale behind the design.

I had this deep thoughts about what would have happened to the future chamions by now, especially in this age of Social Media et al.
I then thought that the future champions would have grown after at least some twenty-something years. The future champions would have probably become Models by now, or even Bloggers, Entertainment Celebrities and might have dashed the Milo's hopes of them becoming Footballers, Olympic Gold-Medalists and so on have been dashed.

Some have even gone ahead to contest and slay in the Big Brother Naija Reality TV Show and grown to become T-Boss, Bisola, Efe and Co.

With these and many more, we would like to change the tagline of Nestle Milo to the following, replacing the old tagline.

Nestle Milo...the food drink of future slay queens.

Photography Training | School of Photography in Nigeria

List of Photography Schools in Lagos NIgeria

OUTLINE
The write up below is broken down into the following

  1.                History of Photography in Nigeria
  2.                Current situation of photography in Nigeria
  3.                The dynamics of Photography
  4.                What you earn as a Photographer in Nigeria

Areas of Photography to delve into

These are called specializations in Photography

This purely depends on your passion and interest. But it is always good to master one area before thinking of delving into another.

We have the following areas of specialization in Photography

1. Fashion (Tonydoo Visuals recommends Shutterwave Photography)

Portraiture (Tonydoo Visuals recommends  islandboiphotography, Ahmed Moore)

Still life ()

Landscape (like Hakeem Salaam )

Architectural (like Hakeem Salam)

Lifestyle (like Kelechi Amadiobi)

Photojournalism (like Bayo Omoboriowo)

Events (like Tonydoo Weddings, George Okoro Weddings)

The interesting angle to learning photography is that your services as a Photographer in Nigeria can be needed at any time in all facets of life from Media, Events Coverage, Advertising Industry, Arts, Runway Modelling and Arts. When we talk about arts, you can hold exhibitions and sell your works. This can earn you a fortune, and then you hit it big overnight.

As it stands, Nigeria ranks as one of the countries with the most number of Photographers in the World.

Virtually every one these days, wants to be a Photographer.

Now that you know what is required of you in order to start Photography, and the myriad of opportuities the Photography profession offers, you really need to take the next step of enrolling in a Photography School as fast as you can.

You need to get some form of formal training and apprenticeship. Also, do not forget as stated earlier that there is no institution or univeristy offering  Photography as a formal degree in Nigeria. However, there are photography companies and pro photographers who offer various diploma courses and apprenticeship.

If you really want to grow and excel in this career, having a Mentor is key.

We shall soon be writing a post on how to get a Photography Mentor in Nigeria. We promise it is going to be a great read.

Practice sure makes you become perfect.

What is required of you - PASSION.

No need for a university Degree of a B.Sc in Photography. In fact, the truth is: No university offers that here in Nigeria. A formal training is all you need.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS REQUIRED FOR PHOTOGRAPHY SCHOOL

1.      A digital SLR Camera with probably an 18-135 or 18-200mm lens

2.      A dedicated flash head (Not on-camera flash)

3.      A memory card (2 gig)

4.      A camera bag

5.      A laptop or desktop computer (for post production)

6.      A card reader (to transfer pictures from Memory card to the laptop)

7.      A set of 4 AA batteries(rechargeable) with charger. In the absence of this, you can get Duracell 4 AA Batteries

8.      The list of photography equipments above are for starters, but in case you plan to take it a step further, you will be needing:

9.      A studi lighting kit of 3 lights, softboxes/umbrellas, tripod stands, trigger

10.   A reflector

11.   A tripod

Truth be told: It is always good to start small. even the Bible says it. Do not despise the days of little beginnings.  As a professional photographer that you plan to become, do not resist starting small and then rise to the top. You really have to ensure your pricing is affordable while at the same time reasonable. It however should not be below industry standards.

As a fellow photographer would say: Never be idle. Build your portfolio. The more your portfolio, the bigger you become in theory and the better you become in practice.

Your confidence level is bound to increase when you have a bigger portfolio. The guts to showcase your works to fellow photographers and even top organisations increases. The methods of getting jobs in this industry is solely through referrals. One new job is often a recursive effect of a previous one which was well executed.

WHEN YOUR DECISION IS MADE.

As soon as you have totally made up your mind, it is then that you begin to earn based on the kind of photography jobs that you get. That singuklar decision to convert your hobby to a profession and from an amateur to a pro is something worth the while and is a continuous journey. Take your time, experiment, shoot a lot, take breaks, examine your inner self and rediscover nouvelle ways of doing things.  You need to do all these before you can begin to say you want to set out as an Photographer entrepreneur.

However sincere as this may sound, there is a need to remind you of the factors important for your entrepreneurial drive. You would need to handle all aspects of the factors of production as we were taught in our early years at school.

1.      Land  This means Loccation, preferrably an Office space. You could even get a shared work space

2.      Labour( Staff who would work for you or assist you. One may be sufficient for you even when you have a lot of money.)

3.      Capital(Equipments of trade. )

4.      Entrepreneur (Management - How you manage the photography business)

WHAT TYPE OF CAMERA EQUIPMENTS TO BUY

At this juncture I would be sincere with you, that no matter how much or little you have to purchase a photography equipment, it is always advisable to buy an equipment that will serve you a long time. Based on Moore's law, every equipment out there is certain to be replaced every eighteen months. This has even changed these days, most technology equipments are now being replaced with better, faster, less sized ones in less than eighteen months.

So here is my 2 cents: Do not rush to buy a camera or photography equipment. Ask around from fellow pro photographers online or in your domain, what camera is the latest and how the one you intend getting compares to it. Because in truth, there is no point going for a photography equipment which would soon become obsolete in like 6 months or 1 year.

In conclusion,  the photography profession is a noble one and requires great determination and focus. It does have its inherrent challenges and as a matter of fact, purchasing your equipment is a challenge of its own. You need to be absolutely certain of what you want from the word go. Always make it a habiot to save enough just in case your equipment breaks down.

Pay your dues, strive hard and be determined.

WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY - 11 TIPS FOR WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHERS IN NIGERIA

WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY - 21 TIPS FOR WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHERS IN LAGOS, NIGERIA

1. CREATE A 'LIST OF PEOPLE TO SHOOT'
I usually employ this tip when photographing most weddings. The reason is simple: you usually do not want to get the photos back to the couple and realizing that you forgot to take a picture of the couple with a very important member of their family. Or perhaps an uncle of theirs who sponsored majority of the wedding.

It is always important to ask the couple ahead of time about who they will like to take pictures with and who is really important not to miss out.

2. CHOOSE WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY FAMILY COORDINATOR
Mehn!! This is usually the most stressful part of the wedding photography sessions. This is due to the fact that getting family members all in one place is not that easy. They are always grossly involved in one part of the wedding event or the other. It is usually best to get a family member nominated by the couple or better still, from each side of the family who can basically just act as the "Executive Director " of the shoot. People like these are the most important to you, because they can easily persuade people to either come on the shoot scene or leave as desired by you, who is the photographer.

3. Be prepared.
In wedding photography, preparation is key! It is tantamount to having a good time out at the wedding, with you being the official photographer of the day! A lot can go wrong on the day - so you should be prepared ahead of time. When it comes to rainy season, weather is so unpredictable. So always have a backup plan. I need not tell you at this juncture, that you should always have extra batteries charged, memory cards wiped or blank. All these should be done before the day. And a night before, or on the day of the wedding, ensure you have found out what the plan is from the couple. Ask them about how the movement is going to be like, the car to follow just in case you are not there with your own car, where the couple's hotel is and a host of other things.

4. Find out what the Couple expects from you.
Setting expectations is really essential to the couple, as well as to you. It is always good to know what they would like to achieve. You already have an idea that you are taking infinite shots, but that still doesn't undermine the fact that you can ask them what special or specific things do they want captured or recorded as the case may be.
Find out if a dance or performance has been planned ahead of time. You obviously do  not want to be confused when surprise dance or performances are going on.

5. Shoot a lot of Details! Details and Detals!!!
I would make mention of two types of details here: Small details and Big details.
Small details are such as the diamonds on the bride's wedding gown, the texture of the suit, the rings, the name on the bride's shoe and so on. While big wedding details refer to the wide angle view of things. It could be an overview of the hall just before the wedding guests have arrived, a birds eye view of the exterior of the hall, the church sitting arrangement, the shoes being worn by thee grooms men and so on. You really need to give the album an extra dimension. Set your album designs in such a way that they are very noticeable. These details will make you look like a pro.

6. Consider using Two Cameras
I would like to say prestissimmo, that you should try, beg, steal or even borrow a second camera. Make sure one of the cam is fitted with a wide angle lens such as a 70-200mm. I recommend this a lot of times. And the other camera, you can fit in a prime lens of about 50mm F1.4.

7. Consider using a Second Photographer
A second shooter is very essential, but if you are a machine, you can do without it. It is always a good strategy to employ. Asides the fact that the second photographer can get shots  that you miss, it is always good to have your job details well spelt out. You can tell him ahead of time, to focus on the guests while you focus on the couple as well as the couple's family. Whatever the case, always try to plan well with your second photographer.

8. Be confident. Exude confidence.
Don't feel too shy to take some shots. People will be funny, they would even attempt to teach you your job. Speak out, control the situation, Let them know you are th best man for this job and as a matter of fact, let them know you are the Photographer in charge. Besides if they were this good, they would be standing in your stead, holding the camera. Being that as it may, do not command. Do not speak arrogantly at some elders or family members. That can make them lash out at you, in the presence of hundreds of people. And you know the bad side to this? You wouldn't be able to reply back. Cos you just cannot start a fight or war of words right there.

9. Display your shots at the reception
Actually one of the great things about this digital photography of ours is the immediacy of it as a medium. More and more photographers are doing this by the day. It is becoming more and more of a TRADITIOn to showcase pictures on a screen while at the wedding. LIVE!!! Pictures taken earlier in the day can be showcased at the reception as a slideshow during the evening.

10. Shoot in RAW. Avoid JPEGS
I have always heard this myself, when I started photographing wedding years back. I usually do not see the need to shoot in raw until I started doing so and the difference; I tell you is unquantifiable. Asides the flexibility you get when you shoot in raw, during post processing, manipulations are infinite. Lighting problems is best corrected when you shoot in raw and then, put in a very good post processing software like Lightroom.

11. Have fun.
Weddings are fun, and as interesting as they sound, it is very easy to get lost. You discover that you are too focused trying to get people's happiness and in the end, you end up feeling so weary, uninteresting. Have all the fun, dance like you own the party towards the tail end of the show. Let everyone know how much fun of a photographer you are and in the end, it would have been yet another fun-filled wedding in the kitty.

Hope you enjoyed this post. I would like to hear from you what your challenges are.
